Michael Alexander, known online as Biblaridion, is a YouTube content creator whose channel has amassed over 150,000 subscribers, and whose work focuses on using real-world scientific principles to create internally consistent and believable fictional worlds for creative projects. Drawing on his academic background in zoology, his flagship series Alien Biospheres demonstrates how to apply concepts from evolutionary biology to hypothetical lifeforms and ecosystems. He also has expertise in linguistics, having created over a dozen grammatically-complete constructed languages, including for professional projects such as Ryan Cahill’s The Bound and the Broken. Above all, he believes that worldbuilding can serve not only to make fictional works feel more immersive and real, but also as a learning tool to encourage curiosity and appreciation of the real world. He also speaks six languages (very badly), enjoys playing TTRPGs, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Constructed Languages

Constructed languages (conlangs) can add a huge amount of depth and richness to a fictional world, and are becoming more and more common in fantasy and science fiction media, from Tolkien’s Elvish to Marc Okrand’s Klingon to David J. Peterson’s Dothraki and High Valyrian.

I have created over a dozen conlangs, including Oqolaawak, Nekāchti, Edun, Ilothwii, and Taqva-miir, all of which are grammatically complete and have a dictionary of several thousand words (video showcases for all of my conlangs can be found here.

To help my languages feel as real and detailed as possible, I employ a historical approach in which I simulate several thousand years of linguistic evolution in such a way that produces the same quirks and irregularities that happen in natural languages.

For commissions, I use the pricing guidelines provided by the Language Creation Society.

Speculative Biology

Speculative biology involves using the laws of biology we observe on earth to extrapolate what life might be like in hypothetical contexts, whether it be on other planets, in alternate timelines, or in fantasy worlds of a fundamentally different nature and cosmology.

Science fiction and fantasy are replete with fictional creatures, which can lend a great degree of interest and verisimilitude to the worlds they inhabit.

Drawing on my academic background in Zoology and years of self-study driven by a lifelong fascination with the natural world, I have a firm grasp of how to apply the principles of evolution, biomechanics, and ecology to creature design, having created dozens of worlds with their own unique native lifeforms, evolutionary histories, and ecosystems.

For my largest project, the alien planet Tira292b created for my video series Alien Biospheres, I have designed over 200 different species of plants and animals, each of which fills a unique role in its ecosystem and is embedded within a complex cladogram that delineates all the species’ evolutionary relationships. I illustrate each species using both hand-drawn sketches and 3D models, supplemented by illustrations submitted by the fan community, who have collectively contributed thousands of images over the course of the project.
